Taxi! The London Black Cab Will Keep Rolling Along

Taxi! The London Black Cab Will Keep Rolling Along

An icon won’t run out of gas after all.

Taxi cabs in Trafalgar Square, London.

To the relief of Anglophiles, the British-as-tea-and-scones London black cab has been saved from extinction. After six years of running in the red, and five months of wobbling along in the British equivalent of bankruptcy, the London Taxi Company, a division of Coventry based Manganese Bronze Holdings, was bought along with its parent company by the Zhejiang Geely Holding Group. The Chinese carmaker already had a 20 percent stake in the company. Last month it forked out more than $17 million to acquire the rest.

The last appearance of the vehicle on the international stage, Olympic watchers will recall, was when the Spice Girls wheeled into the East London stadium in tarted-up versions of the black cab for the closing ceremonies.

So what will the Chinese be getting for their money?

An icon, for one thing, whose design hasn’t evolved much in six decades. The ubiquitous black cab (there are about 21,000 licensed ones in London) has a rounded Alfred Hitchcock-like profile and is spacious, with headroom to spare. And it’s easy to step into. No knees in your stomach side-slide maneuvering, as one does to get into a New York cab.

“Theoretically,” explains Malcolm Linskey, managing director of London-based Knowledge Point, which trains cabbies in “the knowledge” (the in-depth study of street routes cabbies need to know before qualifying for a license), “you should be able to sit in the cab with a top hat on.” Other city-street-friendly traits include the cabs’ ability to spin on a sixpence, thanks to its turning radius of 25 feet.

High-Priced Fare

You don’t have to be a cabbie to own one. All you need is the money, roughly $48,000 (£32,000) for a basic-model version of the TX4, the state-of-the-art black cab. The Duke of Edinburgh has one, as does actor-playwright Stephen Fry, supermodel Kate Moss, and the late King of Tonga.

“It’s an anonymous vehicle,” explains Nyasha Pitt, the London Cab Company’s marketing manager. “If you are a lead singer of a well-known pop group driving one, no one would suspect.” Call it celebrity camouflage. It’s also easily customized. “In the Middle East and in China, owners have installed plasma screens and fridges in the back.”

The cars are manufactured in Coventry, and all vehicles made for the UK will continue to be made there, Pitt said. Cars for other markets will be made in Shanghai.

The bailout was cause for celebration for the 107 employees of the company left standing after 156 were axed when the company was in administration, as bankruptcy is known in England.

“Most companies that go into administration never come out the other end,” Pitt says. But how did the cabbies react to the acquisition? Isn’t it bad enough that quintessentially Brit brands like Jaguar and Land Rover are now owned by India’s Tata Motors? Geely itself had dipped into the global market previously by buying the Swedish car manufacturer Volvo.

“Initially there was great dismay,” admits Linskey, director of the school for London cabbies. “The thinking was the end of the world had come. Now, they’re grateful someone has taken over.”

Denise Ferrer, who has driven a black cab for about a year, was among the appreciative. “If they’d gone under, I’d have been devastated,” she said by cell phone on her way into town for work. “It would be like yellow taxis in New York going to purple.”

Iconic Taxi Show in Marble Arch

LVTA CABALCADE 2013The London Vintage Taxi Association (LVTA) will be flying their flag in London’s Marble  Arch this Sunday 7th April.

From 1.30pm until 17.30pm there will be a line up of iconic FX and Fairway taxis as a celebration the years of service provided to London by these taxis.

Since the Mayor of London’s Air Quality Strategy has imposed a 15 year age limit on taxis in the capital, the iconic Fairways are coming to the end of their working lives as licensed taxis. The LVTA membership does have some taxi drivers who will be taking part in Cabalcade but many of the members are people who just love the vintage taxi and have restored their vehicles to their original state.

This is a chance for the public to see the vehicles from five decades close up and of course lots of great photo opportunities. The taxi has been photographed alongside the old Routemaster buses countless times and holds a place as an iconic symbol of all that is good about London.

Prior to lining up at Marble Arch, the Cabalcade will set off from Chelsea Harbour and wend its way through London stopping off at points that are important in the cabs history.

These include the old Public Carriage Office where licensing was done through to the modern Palestra where the Licensing is now carried out by TfL.

At each point there will be speakers talking about the vehicles – these guest speakers include Lord Jamie Borwick, former owner of the company who then made the vehicles through to the current Taxi and Private Hire Director for Transport for London, John Mason.

The all new Nissan NV200 Taxi Debut

The all new Nissan NV200 Taxi Debut

Nissan will be bringing two new vehicles to the 13th annual Commercial Vehicle Show at the NEC Birmingham next month. Making their UK debuts are the London taxi and electric versions of the NV200 van.

The e-NV200 is the company’s first fully-electric van, and Nissan says it has won praise with fleet operators for zero CO2 emissions at the point of use. Its powertrain is based on that employed in the Nissan Leaf.

Unveiled last year, the NV200 London Taxi is the company’s vision for the future of the iconic black cab (see its Big Apple equivalent here), and has been re-designed to fully comply with the host of TfL (Transport for London) Taxi Conditions of Fitness.

20130329-232624.jpg

Its Euro 5-compliant 89 hp 1.5 dCi engine, coupled to a six-speed manual gearbox, achieves 18.9 km per litre on the combined cycle and emits 138 grams of CO2 per km – both figures significantly improved over the London Taxi Company’s TX4 model. The vehicle comfortably seats five and can accommodate a wheelchair passenger.

Visiting Heathrow | A Guide by Licensed Heathrow Taxis

Heathrow airport

Located 32km (20 miles) to the west of Central London, London Heathrow Airport (LHR) is one of the busiest and most advanced airports in the world. With 190,000 passengers arriving and departing every day, Heathrow handles more international passengers than any other airport in the world.

The airport is spread across five terminals, each with shops, restaurants, currency exchange facilities, information counters, accommodation desks and left luggage facilities.

Heathrow’s latest addition, Terminal 5, opened in 2008 as the airport’s new long-haul base. Heathrow Terminal 5 is the largest freestanding building in the UK and is five times the size of Terminal 4.

Heathrow’s Terminal 2 closed for renovations in late 2009 after nearly 60 years of operation. The new and improved Terminal 2 is due to reopen in 2014.

Licensed Heathrow taxis

Travelling by taxi from Heathrow offers the flexible way of getting into London or beyond. At Heathrow Airport we endorse three distinct fully licensed services. Whether it’s a classic black cab, private hire car or the charm of a personal chauffeur service, there is something that suits all your needs.

Taxis at Heathrow
Iconic London black taxis stop at the taxi ranks outside all Heathrow terminals and can also be booked in advance for a fixed price either online or at the taxi information desks in the arrivals halls of each terminal. All drivers are fully licensed and have passed the world famous ‘Knowledge of London’ examination.

Heathrow to London

Heathrow Express is the fastest way from Heathrow to London Paddington. Our non-stop trains speed you from terminal to city centre in just 15 minutes. Experience airport transfers the easy way, with departures every 15 minutes and tickets available on board, online or on your mobile.

Heathrow by Tube

The Piccadilly line connects Heathrow Airport to Central London and the rest of the Tube system. The Tube is cheaper than the Heathrow Express or Heathrow Connect but it takes a lot longer and is less comfortable. Tube services leave Heathrow every few minutes from approximately 5.10am (5.50am Sundays) to 11.45pm (11.30pm Sundays).

Journey time to Piccadilly Circus is about 50 minutes. There are three Tube stations at Heathrow Airport, serving Terminals 1-3, Terminal 4 and Terminal 5. A single paper ticket from Heathrow (Zone 6) into Central London (Zone 1) costs £5.50. If you’re going to be using London’s public transport system, it’s worth buying an Oyster card. Visit the Transport for London (TfL) website

Heathrow Airport by Coach

National Express runs frequent coach services between Heathrow’s central bus station and Victoria Coach Station. The journey takes between 40 minutes and one hour 30 minutes, depending on the route. Some services stop en route in Hammersmith or Earl’s Court. Standard single tickets cost £6. Services from Heathrow commence at 5.35am and run until 9.40pm.

Heathrow Airport By Bus

Between approximately 11.30pm and 5am (depending on the day of the week), the N9 night busruns about every 20 minutes to Central London (Trafalgar Square). Journey time is approximately 76 minutes. For more information visit the Transport for London website. Standard bus fares apply (£1.40 Oyster/ £2.40 cash) and Travelcards are accepted.

Heathrow pubs and restaurants

If you have ever flown to or from Heathrow, you may be familiar with the Heathrow pubs and restaurants available at the terminals – However, there are a great selection of places to eat in the areas surrounding Heathrow as well and we have gathered a selection of those that we feel are the best.

Car Hire Heathrow Airport

Car hire in Heathrow Airport is one of the best ways to make the most of your trip to England’s vibrant capital city and its surrounding areas. Heathrow handles an average of 190,100 passengers per day.

Directions to Avis at London Heathrow

From M4

All Heathrow Terminals are clearly signposted from the appropriate motorways close to London.

Exit M4 Junction 4, sign posted ‘Heathrow Airport’.

  • At roundabout take exit sign posted Terminals 1, 2, and 3.
  • Keep to inside lane and follow signs to Terminal 4 and Car Rental Returns.
  • At next roundabout take the third exit and turn left at lights following signs for Avis.
  • Avis is approx 1 mile on the left, you will see the back of the Avis building.
  • Take the 1st left at the lights.

Meeting points

The official airport meeting points at Heathrow are marked with signs, and can be found in the following locations:
  • Terminal 1: In the international arrivals area (ground floor), next to the Costa coffee bar.
  • Terminal 3: In the seated area in the arrivals hall (ground floor of the arrivals building).
  • Terminal 4: Next to WHSmith in arrivals (ground floor).
  • Terminal 5: There are two meeting points (north and south) on the ground floor.

Meeting someone from a flight

Before you leave

If you’re meeting someone at the airport, do check the flight is on time before you leave using ourLive flight arrivals page.

You can stay informed on the way to the airport too by using Heathrow’s text message flight information service, Flying Messenger, or our smartphone app.

For directions to Heathrow by car, train or bus, visit our To and from Heathrow section.

Please be aware that for security reasons, vehicles are not allowed to wait on the airport forecourts. If you’re picking someone up by car you should use the Short Stay Car Parks.

At the airport

In the arrivals area, information screens display live flight status information. The status message may be:

  • Expected: The flight hasn’t landed yet – you’ve time for coffee or a spot of shopping.
  • Landed: Generally, allow 30 – 40 minutes after landing for passengers to clear passport control, baggage reclaim and Customs – longer at busy periods.
  • Baggage in hall: Passengers should be in the arrivals area shortly.

Taxi driver robbed at gunpoint

Taxi driver robbed at gunpoint by passengers in Epsom

A taxi driver was robbed at gunpoint after picking up a woman and two men.

Surrey Police said a woman rang his firm at about 23:20 GMT on Friday asking for a taxi from Worcester Park, south London, to Epsom.

The driver was robbed of his wallet and mobile phone by a man armed with a gun after dropping them off in Stanton Close, Epsom.

The second man was also seen to have a gun when he got out of the taxi. The three passengers got away on foot.

Det Sgt Jules Knowles said: “This was an extremely unpleasant ordeal for the taxi driver, who was just trying to do his job.

“Luckily he was not injured but the passengers still managed to get away with his wallet and mobile phone at great cost and inconvenience to him.”

Officers are appealing for anyone with information about the robbery to come forward.
